DJ vs Professional Entertainer, what’s the difference?

This may have happened or might be happening to you.

Amateur DJ

You’re in the middle of a planning for an upcoming event;  a birthday, a wedding, an anniversary, you name it.  After months of exhausting work and getting closer to the big day, you’ve managed to check almost everything off your list.

Venue: check

Catering: check

Invitations: check

Refreshments: check

Outfit: check

Flowers: check

Photographer: check

Transportation: check

Entertainment (DJ):  ?!?!?!?

The DJ, the last piece of the puzzle.   Maybe you procrastinated trusting in the friend of a friend or a cousin that offered to do it for free.  I bet you even considered the idea of DJing yourself.  Even worse, you haven’t left enough of a budget to hire a professional DJ!

Truth is (and sadly for us professional DJs) entertainment is always one of the last things people think of when planning a party. However, it’s THE most important factor in having an amazingly successful event everybody will remember for years to come.

Make entertainment one of your priorities so you won’t end hiring a last-minute DJ on Craigslist.   Some of them (not all) claim they can setup in 10 minutes and promise full entertainment for $20 per hour.  If they can set up in only 10 minutes, what kind of equipment do you really think they are bringing? Remember, price is more than perception; you get what you pay for!

A typical ‘dj’:

  • Has a full-time job during the week (because they aren’t booked enough to make a living from it.)
  • Usually will charge less than $100/hr because it’s a hobby to them and just “extra money”
  • Can’t or won’t offer testimonials of past events because they we’re good enough to get a raving review from their client
  • Will NOT give you a Money-Back Guarantee because they think you will ask for it after their performance is “experienced”
  • Uses a free email account (like yahoo, hotmail or gmail) because they don’t take their business seriously enough to invest $12 for a domain name
  • Will use a generic form for every event (weddings, bar mitzvahs, quinceañeras etc.) because they don’t know proper etiquette for each type
  • Shows up the day of the event without ever visiting it in advance to meet the contact person and do a proper site check
  • Does NOTHING to educate his potential client about the possible scenarios that could unfold throughout the evening and how he will address them
  • Will CANCEL on you if he gets a higher paying gig (even the week of) because after all, he’s NOT a professional
  • And I could go on…

However, not everything is lost. There are always professional companies with equipment on stand by to help you out in an emergency. They will do the complete opposite of everything mentioned above, but well worth the investment.  After all, your guests won’t remember what you fed them.  But they will remember how much fun they had and compliment you on your choice of entertainment.

Will I get a better deal on my Wedding DJ if I pay in advance?

Posted under: wedding dj

You bet! That works not just for weddings, but for most events.

Imagine, you’ve sorted out the main details for your wedding 6 to 8 months in advance. That means less stress for you and your fiancé with enough time to make any changes you both decide, and of course, a better management of your budget.

It’s very common that after the wedding date is set, the bride starts wedding DJ hunting. This is usually about prices and includes attending different events in the wedding industry. However, few decisions are made and only a few book within a week. Most couple make a budget to determine how much they are willing to spend for their wedding.

When the wedding date is approaching – let’s say 3 to 4 months- there is this sense of urgency. Since a ton of information has been collected (brochures, magazines, flyers, business cards, quotes, etc.) it can feel overwhelming to choose the right Wedding DJ.

We’ve seen brides and grooms start a crusade for getting the best deals, by Googling “wedding djs” (ignoring all the information they previously collected). They usually pay full price versus if they had booked the services in advance. Moreover, the best available entertainer will either be already booked or over your allotted budget.

Here’s a wedding secret tip:
Set aside up to 10% of your entire budget for professional entertainment. This way you can ensure you will have the best possible people and experience representing you at your first party as husband and wife.

There is a big advantage in booking in advance. For instance, you can arrange to make small monthly automatic payments that may help with your cash flow. Or what about upgrading your wedding package to the next level for an extra payment? Even better.

We are not saying last-minute weddings can’t be successful. But they are the exception, not the rule. It’s better to be safe than sorry. So book early and explore payment options.

Your wedding DJ is a relative: why you should always say NO

Wedding DJ

Hire A Professional Wedding DJ

Say that again? Your relative is gonna be your DJ”… NOOOOOOoooooooooo

Ok I’m exaggerating a little bit. It’s not that bad if your relative is a professional DJ, that’s his wedding present and he’s bringing the sound, lights and of course the music. But let’s be honest, this isn’t true in most cases.

When brides or grooms call me to rent equipment because his/her brother, cousin or uncle is going to be their DJ, I know that’s a bad sign.

I mean think about it…

…they want to be the wedding DJ, but don’t have equipment? Not promising. They usually don’t have experience either as an MC (Master of Ceremonies). So don’t expect proper wedding etiquette, announcements or attire to matching your nice venue.

Besides, shouldn’t they be enjoying the party as much as your other guests?

I want to share a couple of recent cases that make my point.

Brenda* was clear with her uncle, coming from California, that she’d rather have him as a guest than her DJ.  She wanted to hire a professional DJ for the day. Her uncle was very insistent and she eventually agreed. We delivered the rented equipment and he only brought his music.

When we arrived the day of, her uncle’s lack of experience was bright as day. He realized there were other things missing from what he was going to need.

Fortunately, I was prepared and provided them on the spot. However this was an unexpected extra expense for Brenda and her husband.

A couple of days later when I called her to check how everything went, she said: “It was ok at first, but my uncle DJ’d mostly for himself; playing a lot of Tejano music and when we asked for a variety – he played “pop that p*$#y”!!

Of course, the bride and her mom were furious, but it was too late.

The other case, was a bride’s brother. He was a very nice kid. Yeah, 19. He looked so out of place.

The couple had spent $1,500 on a small ballroom in a golf club. The decoration was tasteful, the buffet was lavish and everything in general looked classy. Everything, except for the boy in the corner, “DJ- wannabe” — wearing tennis shoes, leggings and a checkered long sleeve shirt. And to add insult to injury, he smelt like he hadn’t showered in two days; since he stepped off the plane.

He was guessing for appropriate music for all ages and guests present.

Seriously, think about this: It’s your first party as husband and wife. This is one of those times you need an experienced professional. You want everything to be amazingly successful and fun.

So to brides and grooms to be, if your relative offers themselves to DJ your wedding reception, unless their a professional, politely say “No, thank you. I’d rather you enjoy the party”. And you’ll be doing yourself and your guests a big favor.
